I'm a Fan! Are You?

The Indiana Military Family Assistance Network (IMFAN) was created by a project group of the 2011 Connect with Southern Indiana program, which is operated by the University of Southern Indiana and funded by the Lilly Endowment.

Research conducted for the 2011 project indicates that there is an unmet need for information and services for military veterans and their families after the service member has been back home from deployment for more than six months. IMFAN seeks to fill that need in two ways:

1. By creating and maintaining a comprehensive database of information and services available to Indiana veterans and families. We will also work to get the information distributed as widely as possible at times and places where the affected group is most likely to need them.
2. Through building community capacity for needed services, particularly in the area of individual, marriage, financial and housing counseling.

The southwest Indiana region is unique in that there is no major military base to help serve these needs, or act as a clearinghouse for information as is the case in other areas. Also, since many of the area’s veterans were deployed with the National Guard and Reserve, after separation the network of communication regarding services tends to break down. That is why our group seeks to serve specifically Post 9/11 veterans and their families who are more than six months post deployment.
